Roses and clipped hedge beside a garden path

Lincoln Chen, gardener

Lawns, hedges and beds kept in shape in a climate that wants them to run wild.

Gardens on this part of the coast grow faster than most people plan for. Warm, humid, plenty of rain. A hedge you trimmed in spring is back to its old size by Christmas.

That's most of why people call Lincoln. Not because they can't garden, but because the garden gets ahead of them. A couple of weeks away, a wet month, and suddenly the lawn is knee-high and the weeds have taken the front bed.

Where he starts

Usually with a walk around. Lincoln looks at what's growing, how overgrown it is, and what you actually want it to look like. Some people want a tidy, clipped look. Others want to keep it loose and leafy and just need the paths cleared and the dead stuff cut back. Both are fine, and it makes a difference to the quote.

What's covered

Mowing and edging, hedge trimming and shaping, pruning shrubs and small trees, weeding, mulching and planting, and taking the green waste away when he leaves. Natives, tropicals, formal hedging and fruit trees are all in the mix. Tall trees that need an arborist are not, and he'll tell you so.

One-off or regular

Plenty of people book one big tidy-up and then do the upkeep themselves. Others go on a regular schedule, fortnightly or monthly depending on the garden and the time of year. If you're not sure which suits you, start with the one-off and decide afterwards. Have a read of the mowing frequency guide and one-off or regular? too.

Details on each service: lawn mowing, garden and hedge care and reticulation checks. For the indoor and repair side of the business, see Lincoln Chen, handyman.
