A gutter can be spotless and still overflow if the downpipe is blocked. The tell is water spilling over the front edge near one corner while the rest runs fine.
What blocks them
Wet leaves, bark, roofing grit, small sticks and seedlings wash down the gutter and pack into the bend or the top of the downpipe. Sometimes it's a tennis ball or a nest. Over time silt builds up and the pipe narrows.
How we clear them
We work from the top, using hand clearing and a flush of water to push debris through. We check that water runs freely at the bottom. If it backs up, the blockage may be further down in the underground stormwater pipe, and that's drainage work for a licensed plumber or drainer.
Signs you need it
- Gutters that overflow in one spot
- Water pooling at the base of the wall
- Stains or damp patches on the wall below the gutter
- Gurgling or slow draining after rain
Prevention
Regular gutter clearing keeps debris out of the downpipes in the first place. Overhanging trees are the main cause, so trimming back branches helps. See how often to clean gutters and gutter cleaning.

What to send
A photo of where the water overflows, the number of downpipes, and whether the house is single or double storey. If you know where the downpipe goes (stormwater pit, tank or ground), mention it.
Rainwater tanks
If a downpipe feeds a tank, leaf debris can reach the inlet filter. Mention it, since the filter may need a look too.
